Akosombo and Kpong Dams

Dam Safety Assessment (DSA) and Emergency Preparation Plan (EPP) for the existing Akosombo and Kpong dams

Multiconsult entered a Joint Venture with Royal Haskoning (NL) to undertake a DSA (Dam Safety Assessment) and EPP (Emergency Preparation Plan) for the existing dams and appurtenant structures.

Akosombo and Kpong are both embankment dams, with height of 141 m and 19 m respectively. The total fill volume for Akosombo is 7.9 Mm3 and 1.4 Mm3 for Kpong. The project includes a power station at Kpong, with intake and penstocks at Akosombo). The spillways consist of 12 radial gates at Akosombo and 15 radial gates at Kpong. Inundation maps were prepared based on LiDAR mapping. The inundated area covers about 1,500 km2.

Scope of work

Mobilization, inspections, data collection and assessment of structures mechanical and civil. New flood estimates (by JV partner) and preparation of routing procedures for the gated dams. Establishment of earthquake loads and stability analyses.

Suggestions for improvements to meet current international good practice standards for the DSA (Dam Safety Assessment). Aerial mapping (LiDAR) of downstream areas affected by a potential dambreak and preparation of inundation maps. Identification of local government structures, villages and safe havens. Preparation of communication directory and emergency action plans for the EPP (Emergency Preparedness Plan). Training and workshops for both parts of the assignment.
