Atemo Falls Mini HPP

Pre-feasibility study

As part of a yearly program for students – Must Energy International Hydropower  – Multiconsult conducted a pre-feasibility study for Atemo Falls HPP.

The study was conducted by a student team supervised by Multiconsult senior engineers and specialists. The study included an assessment of the potential 1,9 MW hydropower project in Atemo Falls and also an analysis on the possibility of powering the construction of the hydropower plant with solar power and future operation of a combined hydro and solar power plant.

Scope of work

Atemo Waterfalls has the technical potential to be the site of a run-of-river hydropower project. Three different solutions for choice of turbines have been considered and the most promising alternative is to install two turbines with 1.5 and 0.45 MW capacity. The report presents technical solutions for the civil works, electromechanical equipment, connection to the grid, as well as identification of social and environmental impacts of the power plant.

The study was conducted through desk research from Multiconsult`s headquarters in Oslo, field surveys at site in Homa Bay County and interviews and further data collection in Nairobi.
