Multiconsult to oversee electrification of 1 500 villages in Tanzania

Multiconsult and Norplan Tanzania have been selected by the Tanzania Rural Energy Agency (REA) to support a EUR 100 million project aiming to expand electricity access across nine regions with approx. 1 500 villages as well as to hybridize two remote diesel grids.

1. December 2022

The project will support the implementation of the National Rural Electrification Program in Tanzania by connecting tens of thousands of rural households to the grid. Currently only 25 percent of rural households are connected to the national grid or mini-grids. This project will contribute to bringing the number closer to the national objective of 75 percent by 2030.

Multiconsult’s role in the project is to provide technical assistance services for design and supervision of works for the various grid extension lots, as well as the hybrid generation systems which will combine new solar power with existing diesel generator units. The team will also execute a baseline survey and impact assessment, each with 3,000 respondents, as well as the monitoring of environmental and social compliance.

The work will start in the first quarter of 2023 and is planned to be completed within 24 months. The total value of the contract is approximately NOK 50 million, financed by the French Development Agency.

– This project complies very well with Multiconsult’s strategy for the East African Region and will strengthen our position to future opportunities in the Energy development, says Market Director Renewabel Energy Tom Ødegaard in Multiconsult.
