Multiconsult supported Performance Improvement Plans for Ghana´s two main distribution utilities approved

The three-year Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) plans aim to reduce system losses, improve customer service, and enhance operational and commercial performance of the Electricity Company of Ghana and Northern Electricity Distribution Company. This will in turn improve their financial and service delivery to millions of customers. Multiconsult, with funding from the German Development Bank (KfW) has supported the development of both plans.

– The underfunding and underperformance of African utilities is a root cause of the low electrification rates and poor supply quality seen across the Continent. We firmly believe that these plans chart a way to sustainability for both the involved companies, and could serve as examples for other African utilities, says Multiconsult Vice-President for Power Systems Mr. Vegard Willumsen.

A Revenue Protection Program, including replacement of aged meters, measures to improved payment from public clients, and the streamlining of Commercial Management Systems are among the initiatives included in the Performance Improvement Plans.

– This has been a collaborative process between our experts and the competent staffs at Electricity Company of Ghana and Northern Electricity Distribution Company. We are pleased that the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission agrees with our assessment that these plans provide sound roadmaps for both utilities, and will improve service delivery to millions of Ghanaians, says Mr. Willumsen.

The Performance Improvement Plans are a part of Multiconsult´s growing portfolio of projects in Ghana, which also includes work in floating solar and policy advisory.
