Makambako Wind Project

Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.

Norsk Vind AS, through its subsidiary Sino-Tan Renewable Energy Ltd., is planning to construct and operate a wind power project of up to 100 MW at a site near the town of Makambako in Tanzania.

Multiconsult prepared a preliminary Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) in 2010 but the project was then stalled for several years. The purpose of this assignment was to update the ESIA report to obtain an environmental permit and to make the project ‘bankable’ in accordance with IFC performance standards.

Project solution

Multiconsult upgraded the preliminary Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) into a full ESIA in 2018-2019. The ESIA was prepared in accordance with national regulations and international safeguard requirements.

Field work included biodiversity surveys with particular emphasis on birds and bats. Multiconsult was also responsible for the public consultation process and for compiling the data from the property surveys and asset inventory. Detailed programmes for impact mitigation and monitoring were outlined in an Environmental and Social Management Plan.
