Hotel Norge by Scandic – Complete refurbishment and extension of hotel

After Scandic Hotels took over operations of Hotel Norge in Bergen, the hotel has been fully refurbished at a cost of almost three quarters of a billion Norwegian kroner. Multiconsult has been the overall design consultant for the project.

The hotel’s floor area has been increased from 28,000 to 30,000 square metres, and the number of rooms has risen from 357 to 411. Hotel Norge by Scandic is both the biggest hotel in Bergen and the biggest building in Bergen city centre. Construction work started on 1 September 2016 and the hotel reopened on 29 June 2018.

During the preliminary design phase, Multiconsult worked directly with the client Hotel Norge Holding. For the detailed design phase, our point of contact was the main contractor, Constructa.

Since it first opened its doors in 1885, Hotel Norge has been an icon and one of Bergen’s most distinguished hotels. Three years ago Multiconsult started work on a preliminary design for its complete refurbishment, and subsequently acted as the consultant for all design disciplines through a partnership contract with Constructa.

“Modernising a prominent building is never easy. In this project there were various challenges related to ceiling height, load bearing walls that had to kept, in short, the building’s physical limitations. It’s motivating to work on projects that aren’t that straightforward, but it does create some difficult challenges”, says project manager Torstein Bigset Riise.

Almost 60 employees from Multiconsult Bergen have been involved in the project. On average, 25–30 people have been working on the project over the past two years. They have been spread across multiple disciplines like acoustical engineering, fire safety, environmental engineering, building physics and specialist consulting, structural engineering, HVAC and sanitary installations, electrical engineering, automation and safety/security systems, as well as project management. Our lighting design team in Oslo and a draughtsman in Stavanger have also contributed to the project.
